            Class Description

Get ready for a new AKC Fetch title with this class for all levels of Fetch.  This class will instruct handlers on rules and regulations for AKC Fetch at each level.  We will practice line manners, marking, and retrieving skills.  Dogs must be over 6 months old and not be reactive to people or other dogs.

Long leads, bumpers, etc will be provided for this class.  Please bring plenty of water as we are working outdoors in the fenced in area behind the MADTA building.

AKC Fetch is a pass-fail noncompetitive test.  At the Novice level, dogs will retrieve a ball, bumper or toy at a distance of 30 feet navigating between four obstacles three times.  At the Intermediate level, dogs will retrieve a ball, bumper or toy at a distance of 50 feet navigating between 8 obstacles three times.  In the Advanced and Retriever levels, the dog must respond correctly to signals. There is also a memory component in Advanced and Retriever because a retrieving bumper or ball is dropped (or thrown) behind a blind where it cannot be seen.

Crates are required for this class.  Dogs can be crated in your car or outdoors under the canopy while not working

Many common retrieve issues such as mouthing, improper pickups, reluctance to retrieve, pawing at the dumbbell, playing with it and more can often be prevented with a solid retrieve foundation.  If you're experiencing retrieve issues with your dog, this class is for you!  If your dog doesn't know how to do a competition obedience retrieve and you'd like to learn how to start, this class is also for you.  The focus of this workshop style mini-class, which will meet for three one-hour sessions, will be on developing (or rebuilding) a foundation for a reliable and enthusiastic retrieve.  The steps for training a Motivational Retrieve will be introduced and the class will touch on topics such as building value for the dumbbell, developing the Stationary Hold, developing the Moving Hold and the steps involved in shaping a retrieve.  An overview of shaping, reward markers and reward timing as well as the use of props and problem solving as needed will be presented as well.  Training games will be incorporated throughout the class to help develop a solid Hold as well as increase desire, motivation and speed.

Equipment:  Dumbbell, leash (preferably 6'), clicker, soft high value treats
