Canine Flu 2023 - Upper Respiratory Illness

There are a lot of unknowns about this newest canine illness. We should all do our best to work to avoid the spread of this disease by following some basic recommendations:

      • Keep your dog up to date on vaccines, including but not limited to Bordetella, Parainfluenza, and Canine Influenza, and avoid direct contact with other dogs.
      • If your dog has been exposed to a dog with an upper respiratory illness, but is showing no symptoms, it is recommended you quarantine that dog for a minimum of 2 weeks. Do not take it to any areas where other dogs will be.
      • If your dog has been exposed to a dog with an upper respiratory illness, and is showing symptoms, it is recommended you quarantine that dog for a minimum of 4 weeks after all symptoms have passed. Do not take it to any areas where other dogs will be.
      • Absolutely do not take your dog to any events if it is showing signs of respiratory illness such as coughing, sneezing, wheezing, any nasal discharge, lack of energy, or difficulty breathing.

These are recommendations put out by the American Kennel Club.

Out of an abundance of caution, the club will provide hand sanitizer and wipes at each training ring.  Do not pet other dogs and then pet your dog without cleaning your hands in between.  Do not let your dog sniff other dogs.  Do not share water bowls or toys or training equipment without cleaning them in between.  Please be your dogs advocate so they all stay safe.

        Class Description

      • According to AKC, the sport of Scent Work celebrates the joy of sniffing, and asks a dog to sniff to their heart’s content; turning your dog’s favorite activity into a rewarding game. In so many dog sports the handler is in control but this isn’t true in Scent Work. In a competition, neither the dog nor handler knows where the target odor is hidden. The handler has to rely on the dog, and follow the dog’s nose to success. In Scent Work, it is the canine who is the star of the show.

      • This class will explore the basic concepts of Scent Work. It will cover how to play Scent Training games at home to meet your dog’s need for mental and physical stimulation. As your dog learns to problem solve and gain focus, this class will also give an overview of the competitive aspect of the sport by introducing odor (the scented oils dog search for at a trial) and covering some foundational skills.

      • This class is good for dogs needing more confidence, dogs who have a lot energy and need a job, as well as senior dogs and those recovering from an injury.

      •

      • Dog Crates are required for this class.
