Dog Crates are required at all classes with the exception of AKC Star Puppy, Beginner Obedience, and Advanced Beginner Obedience.  Dogs must be crated when not in the ring.

To Register Find the class in the listing below.  You can also click on the class in the chart above which will take you to the class registration.  The list below  has the classes in chronological order according to start date.  Registration will show closed until Registration Opens for full members on Aug 10@12AM.  Registration will open for Associate members on Aug 14 @12AM. Registration for Non-Members will open Aug 17 @12AMTap on the "Register" button on the left hand side of the class listing and follow the questions.  If you try to register before the opening date of your level of membership the only option available will be the Instructor/ Board Member option which requires a pass code.  If you get this, check when registration opens for your level of membership and return on that date to register.  If paying by check, money order or Canine Cash select "Invoice me" on the payment screen.  You will receive a pending confirmation and a copy of your invoice in your email.  Print the invoice and enclose it with your payment, send to Betsy Powers 3306 N Eisenhower Ave.  Hernando, FL 34442.  Payment must be received within 5 days of registering or no later than Aug 21 which ever comes first to retain your reservation.   Do not mail or drop off payment to the club.

    Class Description:

    This class will focus on teaching the Utility exercises used in AKC Utility competition.  This class will provide each student with 15 minutes of private instruction.  Handlers will also help each other by putting out articles and gloves, and doing the moving stand exercise. 

    Prerequisites: Your dog must have a reliable Retrieve and be able to work off lead with other dogs also off lead. 

    Equipment:  You must have a set of scent articles and 3 white gloves.  See AKC Obedience Rules for requirements for articles and gloves.

    Class Description:

    In this class you will learn basic Obedience for a well behaved pet at home and in the neighborhood.  You and your dog will learn how to walk on a loose leash, as well as basic commands such as sit, down and come.  This class teaches beginning requirements toward your dog becoming a Canine Good Citizen.

    Class Description 

    This is a step towards the competition ring  for  Obedience and  Rally and prepares students for CGC/CGCA and Beginner Novice title.

    Prerequisites: Dog and handler have completed a Beginner Obedience class or handler has trained a dog before. Dog should be able to do a sit and down on command and does a controlled walk on leash.

    You will be working on tightening up your obedience handling skills, learn the figure 8, stand/sit for exam and work on attention along with advanced stays. Exercises from Beginner Novice Obedience, Novice Obedience, Rally and the CGC and CGCA tests will be worked on.

    Emphasis will be placed on attention and learning how to work as a team to give handlers and dogs a  good foundation.

    Class Description:

    This class is for dogs who want to compete in AKC Obedience.  The skills taught in this class will get you ready to enter an AKC Obedience trial at the Novice level.  Skills taught are: precision heeling on lead and off lead, Stand stay with a person able to go over the dog, recall from 30 ft away , fronts and finishes.  You will also learn some training games to keep the training upbeat.  

    Prerequisites for this class: completion of the Advance beginner class or an AKC BN title.

    Class Description This class will focus on the exercises required for AKC Open Obedience Competition.  The class will cover the basics for proper execution of each of the exercises.  For those dogs that do not have a retrieve this is the class for you.  In this class you will teach your dog 2 different jumps the high jump and the broad jump.  For the more experienced teams they will work on proofing exercises and polishing up their performance for the ring.  All dogs must have good off leash control and be capable to heel both on and off leash with distractions.  Items covered in the class will be learning the drop on recall, position changes, retrieving and the jumps.  Varying degrees of distractions and ring pressure bases on the teams level of experience will be utilized.

    Prerequisite:  You must have earned a minimum of 1 leg towards your AKC Companion Dog Title.

    Class Description

    For the competitor just starting to train for Utility Obedience.  This class will cover how to teach your dog the exercises for AKC Utility Obedience Competition.  The class will cover the basics of Utility ring procedure. Handlers will learn how to start your dog for scent articles, directed retrieve, hand signals without voice commands, directed jumping including a go out across a 40 ft ring and the moving stand.   Dogs must have good off leash control and know how to heel both on and off leash with distractions.    

    Prerequisite:  You must have earned a minimum of 1 leg towards your AKC Companion Dog Excellent Title (CDX)

    Required Equipment for the class

           1 set of articles consisting of 2 of the following sets, 6 leather articles, 6 metal articles or 6 wood articles.

            3 white gloves

    Class Description

    This class will introduce you to the sport of Rally.  Rally combines various obedience skills such as sit, down and stand into a course.  It is upbeat and fun for both you and your dog.  This class will teach you how to perform the 42 novice rally signs and practice stringing them together into a course.  By the end of the class you will have learned everything necessary to enter an AKC Rally Trial at the novice level. 

    Prerequisites: Your dog must have completed a beginner Obedience class and be capable of performing sit, down, stay, and come on command and walk on a loose leash.  

    A Crate for your dog is Mandatory Equipment that you will need each week at the class.

    Dogs must be crated when not in the ring.

    This class is limited to six teams.

    Class Description: 

    This class is for Puppies up to 10 Months by the start of class.  This class follows the AKC guidelines for the  Star Puppy Program. This program focuses on the bond development between puppy and owner. 

    The AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy is an exciting program designed to get dog owners and their puppies off to a good start. The AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Program is an incentive program for loving dog owners who have taken the time to take their puppies through a basic training class

    Below is listed the 20 steps to success with your puppy

    20 STEPS To Success: The AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy® TEST

    OWNER BEHAVIORS:

    1. Maintains puppy’s health (vaccines, exams, appears healthy)

    2. Owner receives Responsible Dog Owner’s Pledge

    3. Owner describes adequate daily play and exercise plan

    4. Owner and puppy attend at least 6 classes by an AKC Approved CGC Evaluator

    5. Owner brings bags to classes for cleaning up after puppy

    6. Owner has obtained some form of ID for puppy-collar tag, etc.

    PUPPY BEHAVIORS:

    7. Free of aggression toward people during at least 6 weeks of class

    8. Free of aggression toward other puppies in class

    9. Tolerates collar or body harness of owner’s choice

    10. Owner can hug or hold puppy (depending on size)

    11. Puppy allows owner to take away a treat or toy

    PRE-CANINE GOOD CITIZEN® TEST BEHAVIORS

    12. Allows (in any position) petting by a person other than the owner

    13. Grooming-Allows owner handling and brief exam (ears, feet)

    14. Walks on a Leash-Follows owner on lead in a straight line (15 steps)

    16. Sits on command-Owner may use a food lure

    Class Description

    This class is for more experienced teams who want to strengthen and broaden their Scent Work skills for dogs who have a solid foundation of searching for odor. 

    We will do run-throughs on elements used in Scent Work competitions: containers, interiors, exteriors, buried, and vehicles (weather permitting), while increasing your confidence in reading your dog in more complex searches. Practice element searches will be adapted to the needs of the class participants.


    Crates are required. All dogs must be crated when not working.

    Class Description 

    This class will be for Handlers who have had some formal training in the Novice Exercises and wish to enhance what they have already learned.  You will learn how to progress towards and perfect off leash heeling, along with the other Novice Exercises.  This class will help you to prepare yourself and your dog for competition in the Novice AKC obedience Trials. Your dog must have a reliable recall around other dogs. 

    Exercises taught:   Enhanced Heeling if your dog is ready including the Figure Eight exercise.   Sit for Exam, Stand for Exam, Sit and Down Exercises, Recall.  Distractions will be  used to enhance these exercises. 

    Prerequisites for this class: completion of the Advance beginner class or an AKC BN title.

      Class Description

    • This class will work on improving the foundational skills needed by Scent Work teams early in their Scent Work journey. (Dogs must be confidently working on odor to take this class.) 

      Some topics that may be covered include: effective handling skills, reading your dog, building confidence and motivation, odor behavior, and hide setting. We will also discuss trial participation and practice search elements used in Scent Work competitions: containers, interiors, exteriors, buried, and vehicles (weather permitting.) Practice element searches will be adapted to the needs of the class participants.

    Class Description 

    This class will introduce and perfect the exercises required for the Beginner Novice and Novice Obedience classes for AKC obedience competition.  You will learn heeling in proper position thru turns and pace changes, recalls including fronts and finishes, exams without moving and sit and down stays.  This class is designed to be repeated multiple times as most dogs require more than 7 weeks time to be proficient in all the skills being taught.    

    Prerequisites: Dogs must know how to sit and down on command, walking with you on a loose leash and be able to sit quietly at your side. 


    Dog crates are required for this class.

    Dogs must be crated when not working in the ring.

    Class Description: 

    This class is for dog and handler teams that have a full understanding of the Open and Utility exercises.  Instruction will be offered on ways to improve and polish your performances.  Challenges will be used to assure you and your dog have a full understanding of each exercise and can work under stress and induced pressure. 

    Prerequisites: The class requires that you can demonstrate to the instructor that you can perform ALL Open & Utility exercises & that the dog has a solid understanding of those exercises.
    Dogs MUST be capable of working off leash around other working dogs whilst being under FULL voice command”

    Class Description:

    This class for dogs who already know the exercises for open obedience competition and are getting ready to enter the competition ring.  This class will work on polishing your performance by challenging your dog to work through appropriate distractions, and bad dumbbell throws so when they get to the competition ring you and your dog will find it easier to execute the exercises.  This class is designed to be taken multiple times as most dogs would not master the skills in just 7 weeks.

    Prerequisites: Completion of the Competition Open Obedience class, and/or a comprehensive understanding of off leash heeling, retrieve, jumping, drop on recall and command discrimination.

    Equipment:  You must have a dumbbell.

        Class Description:

        This Class is for students that have not had any prior training.  The exercises taught will be Walk on a loose leash, Sit and Down exercises, Recall, Leave it command, Teach your dog not to Jump up.  Teach your dog how to enter and exit doors.  Some distractions will be used to enhance Sit and Down stays along with the Recall and Walking on a loose leash.  House manners will also be included.   This class teaches beginning requirements toward your dog becoming a Canine Good Citizen.

        Class Description 

        This course is designed for the teams that have a full understanding of the rally signs 1-123.  Dogs work off leash and are able to jump the required height jump for the size of their dog.  This class will polish performances for all the rally signs focusing on the Master and Excellent levels. 


        The class will focus on execution of the signs in addition to performing master/excellent level courses 


        Crates are required at each class so handlers can work needed footwork and walk courses.
